Upperclass New Yorker Marjorie Taub, a failed novelist and frequent patron of the arts, is in deep depression until her old friend Lee Green comes into her life.  The globetrotting, influential Lee is everything Marjorie is not, and her company revitalizes her.  But neither Marjorie's allergist husband, Ira, her mother, nor anyone else has actually seen Lee, and they suspect she is a figment of Marjorie's imagination.  But it turns out Lee is more than real, and her manipulation of the Taubs' money and even their sex life has a positive effect.
